FIFA World Cup 2026 Fixtures & Schedule: Complete Match Calendar, Host Cities & Format Guide
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is unlike any tournament that came before it. For the first time in history, three nations — the United States, Canada, and Mexico — will co-host football's flagship event, and for the first time, 48 national teams will battle for the trophy across 104 matches in 16 host cities. Whether you're booking flights, planning a watch party, or just want to know when your country plays, this is the only fixtures guide you'll need.
📅 Tournament Dates at a Glance
The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup runs from Thursday, June 11, 2026 through Sunday, July 19, 2026 — 39 days of football across three time zones and three nations. The opening match takes place at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, which becomes the first stadium in history to host World Cup matches in three different tournaments (1970, 1986, 2026). The Final will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside New York City.

⚽ The New 48-Team Format Explained
Expanding from 32 teams to 48 changes the entire shape of the tournament. Here's how it now works:
- 12 groups of 4 teams in the group stage (instead of 8 groups of 4)
- Each team plays 3 group-stage matches
- The top 2 from each group automatically advance, plus the 8 best third-placed teams — 32 teams total move on
- A new Round of 32 is added before the traditional Round of 16
- Knockout rounds: Round of 32 → Round of 16 → Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final
- The eventual champion will play 8 matches total — one more than under the old format
🗓️ Round-by-Round Schedule
Group Stage: June 11 – June 27, 2026
72 matches over 17 days. Three matches per day in the early stages, ramping up to as many as six on certain matchdays. The opener is Mexico's traditional honour at the Azteca; co-hosts USA and Canada will play their opening fixtures within the first 48 hours.
Round of 32: June 28 – July 3, 2026
An entirely new round added because of expansion. 16 matches, two per day, mostly held at venues in the United States to accommodate the volume.
Round of 16: July 4 – July 7, 2026
The traditional last-16 round narrows the field. July 4 (American Independence Day) features marquee fixtures designed for prime-time U.S. television.
Quarter-finals: July 9 – July 11, 2026
Eight teams remain. Four matches across three days at Boston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, and Miami.
Semi-finals: July 14 – July 15, 2026
Dallas (AT&T Stadium) and Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium) host the two semi-finals.
Third-Place Playoff: July 18, 2026 — Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
FINAL: Sunday, July 19, 2026 — MetLife Stadium, NY/NJ
Kick-off is provisionally scheduled for the early evening Eastern time, perfectly placed for European prime-time viewing.

📍 Regional Match Clusters
To minimise travel for fans and teams, FIFA has divided group-stage fixtures into three regional clusters:
- Western cluster: Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Guadalajara
- Central cluster: Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Monterrey, Mexico City, Atlanta
- Eastern cluster: Toronto, Boston, NY/NJ, Philadelphia, Miami
Most teams will play their group-stage fixtures within a single cluster, though the longer flight times across the continent will still test stamina once knockout rounds begin.
⏱️ Track Kick-off Times Across Time Zones
With matches kicking off across five different North American time zones, scheduling can get tricky. Use our free online stopwatch for precision timing during matches, and our countdown timer to count down to your team's kick-off, no matter where you are in the world.
🏆 What Makes This World Cup Different
Beyond format and geography, the 2026 World Cup will be the first to use FIFA's expanded video review system, climate-aware scheduling (afternoon kick-offs avoided in Mexico, Florida, and Texas), and Bluetooth-enabled "connected ball" technology to confirm offsides and ball-possession in real time. Expect average attendances above 80,000 — the highest in tournament history — and the first World Cup with both indoor (Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, LA) and outdoor venues at the same edition.
